Can I Get a Cheap Divorce Online in California?

Cheap Online Divorce in California

Is it possible to get a cheap divorce online in California? Yes! It is absolutely 100% possible IF YOUR CASE IS AN UNCONTESTED DIVORCE.  Uncontested simply means that you and your spouse/partner will not be disputing any issues in your case. You don’t have to like each other, but you are not going to fight over any issue.

Cheap Divorce in CaliforniaCheap Divorce Online in CaliforniaNetDivorce and its pre-Internet company, California Legal Assistance Centers, has been helping California divorce consumers get cheap uncontested divorce since June 1, 1981.

For the first 20 years of our existence, California Legal Assistance Centers had offices in Riverside and Sacramento. In 1999, when we began to think about moving online, our fee to handle an uncontested California divorce by snail mail was $250.  That was cheap divorce in those days!

Now, we are online only. Same people, just online, and we have a flat fee of $129 with no ups or extras.  $129 is now cheap divorce online in California.

Here’s what our flat $129 fee covers:

  • Preparation of all your state and local county divorce papers ready to be signed and filed at your local court;
  • Detailed written customized directions telling you how to file your case at your local Superior Court. It’s easy!! Don’t pay anyone to file your case at court;
  • Your custom Marital Settlement Agreement, the most important doc in your case;
  • Your Request to Waive Court Costs, if needed;
  • Unlimited client support from our 2 senior caseworkers, Ed (34+ years in California divorce) and Peter (38+ years) Monday-Friday 7 AM – 7 PM.

So What Are the Requirements To Get a Cheap Divorce Online in California?

There’s only one requirement!  And I’ve already told you what it is.  Your case must be uncontested. That means that your spouse/partner will not file a Response at court to contest the case. That’s it. There’s nothing else. There are no other requirements to get a cheap divorce online in California.

Cheap Divorce Online in CaliforniaYour spouse/partner doesn’t have to be cooperative. S/he doesn’t have to communicate with you. Heck, s/he doesn’t even have to smile.  You don’t even need to be in the same room as your spouse/partner. As long as s/he doesn’t contest the case.

Now, let’s keep it real.  If your spouse/partner is cooperative, speaks to you and is smiling, then that makes your case much easier and you are much more likely to get everything you request from the court – because the judge will see in the Marital Settlement Agreement that you and your spouse/partner are in agreement.  But the point remains that you can get a cheap divorce online in California for $129 if your spouse does not contest the case.

What happens if your spouse doesn’t fight the case but isn’t cooperative.  We proceed without the protection of the Marital Settlement Agreement, and the judge looks much more closely at your requests before signing your divorce judgment.  Will you still get your divorce judgment?  Yes, but it may not contain every request that you made. The judge has the power to make changes to your requests and is more likely to do so when s/he sees that there is no Marital Settlement Agreement. What that will mean in your specific case depends on what you have requested, the overall facts of your case and the individual judge assigned to your case.

So, if your spouse/partner is a jerk, but doesn’t contest the case, you may not get everything you want, but you will certainly get a cheap divorce online in California.

OnlineDivorcer.com$139++Initially based in the Czech Republic, but now based in Mexico (??). Initially claimed over 10,000 divorces completed and 12 years of experience as of 2019, but the Czech company (Palantis Group) only started in April 2018 and this website has only been up since December 2019. Therefore, this appears to be yet another foreign scam.

DANGER: $139 covers you only for 45 days of service. You will need much more than 45 days to obtain your divorce judgment in California. They do not disclose fees after the first 45 days. You will not know your complete cost. If you want to sign a blank check for your simple uncontested divorce, this is the way to go!

UPDATE: OnlineDivorcer.com advised us in December 2021 that it is now owned by Boosters Lab, Inc., a company located in Mexico, NOT the Czech Republic. As of this update, onlinedivorcer.com has also dropped its claim that it has been in business for 12 years and that it has completed over 10,000 divorces. They still do NOT disclose all fees!!

Completecase.com$299ALERT: THIS FEE IS FOR A 1-MONTH SUBSCRIPTION ONLY!! THEN THEY HIT YOUR CREDIT CARD EVERY MONTH UNTIL YOU CANCEL; Nationwide. Experienced; State AND county docs; This was a really good company for many years; It’s a shame they’ve started using the one-month price fraud scam.
DivorceSimplifiedMyWay.com/$499 – no kids or assets
$699 – kids OR assets
$799 – kids AND assets
They also have a $99 teaser, which is just for the first few docs; Owned and operated by Anthony Dunne, a California lawyer who was disbarred in December 2019 for 5 counts of serious misconduct, including the theft of over $50K of clients’ money; NOTE: Obviously, not everyone listed in this table is a criminal, but this is just one example of a few who are; Online divorce is completely unregulated; Any criminal or conman can set themselves up as an online divorce provider; on their website, it says, “Our company’s founder retired from his family law firm…” We guess a disbarment is a form of retirement.
HelloDivorce.com$99 – $4500Very tricky pricing. $99 looks attractive, but it’s a teaser fee. THAT FEE DOES NOT INCLUDE ANY CLIENT SUPPORT. You are completely on your own. You get to use their online system, but you can’t ask questions. California divorce is the second most difficult in the whole country. You will need client support or things will go wrong. When you screw up your case, they upsell you to their $1100, $2500, $3000 or $4500 packages to clean up the mess you would not have if you had client support. The fact that their teaser fee is $99 and their next package up is $1100 should be enough to tell you all you need to know. Be careful.
ItsOverEasy.com$750 – $2500Latest foo-foo hipster divorce site. UPDATE Feb 2022 – Glad to see that this outfit has stopped running the $99 teaser fee scam This is now just another over-priced service. ALL FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE NO MATTER WHAT!! Their $750 package is when there are no minor children of the marriage and no property or debt to be included in your case. If you have minor children and/or property or debt, it’s $2500! Really nice website.
Wevorce.com$949+++++Way overpriced; Big upseller; Tries to move you to subscribing attorneys, accountants, financial planners, psychiatrists, counselors, etc.; All of these are EXTRA! None is included in the $949. Total hipster feel-good; nonsense; If you and your spouse could do the Wevorce procedure, you wouldn’t be getting a divorce; State docs only; ALERT: THIS FEE IS FOR A 1-MONTH SUBSCRIPTION ONLY!! THEN THEY HIT YOUR CREDIT CARD FOR $200 EVERY MONTH UNTIL YOU CANCEL;
Separate.us$999UPDATE Jan 2022 – GONE; Out of Business-the last 4 providers listed in this table all try to sell $1000 uncontested divorces in California when NetDivorce offers the SAME package for $129. How can they survive? Total Rip; Quotes $999 but then also quotes a $99 “Total Fee” that is nothing but a teaser. $99 is their fee for the first filing docs only!! If you want the whole divorce – it’s a grand!! Cool website, though.
